Creationist ad campaign suggests atheism leads to murder

Dear reader, our blog has moved to a new address.

Do come on over (and change your bookmarks accordingly): rationalist.org.uk

Here's something to make you wonder what all the fuss was about over the competing Atheist and Christian bus campaigns, with their colourful fonts and "enjoy your life" slogans. I initially thought this was a new campaign having seen it on this blog, but it turns out PZ Myers had blogged it yesterday in response to the shooting this weekend of abortion doctor George Tiller. It's a campaign from a few years ago by US creationist group Answers in Genesis, which is responsible for Kentucky's preposterous Creation Museum, which suggested that atheism (or perhaps even just accepting that evolution is true) leads to gun-toting maniacs gunning down good God-fearing, Garden of Eden-believing Christian fundamentalists. Since I've never seen it before, I'm guessing some of you also won't have, so it seems worth sharing here.

And if the pictured billboard wasn't quite enough for you, Answers in Genesis also produced this delightful video starring the same kid:

I'm an atheist and I shoot things all the time - friends, family, defenceless animals, even inanimate objects. My Pentax Optio Digital Camera truly was a fantastic birthday present *grins*

I truly find it staggering that someone would try to not only make the connection with lack of religion and murder, but to blatantly suggest that good god-fearing folks are incapable of murder.

One only needs to look through the papers to see the opposite is true, though often overlooked by a neat shift-of-the-goalposts vis caring-for-by-proxy, which neatly allows fundamentalist christians to carry out murder in the name of ... (just fill in the blank and it's OK by them/god/whoever).

Surely the inverse poster should show a good christian gun wielding chap carrying the slogan: "He's got god, so you don't matter to him."

Be scared. Be very scared.

I guess it's plain from history that good god-fearing people are NOT scared of killing fellow humans, whatever the specific god is. I don't know of any correlation between atheism and killing sprees, but as far as I know there has never been an atheist army...

I don't get it..."If you don't matter to god, you don't matter to anyone?" How do they know the mind of god? (Hypothetically speaking of course.)

Romans 11:33-36 (King James Version)

33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

35Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

(I'm a Humanist, BTW, but it's just this type of idiocy I find in faith that brings me close to militant anger over such things as this and Tiller's death.)

I'm reading through the Bible at the moment. I've just finished Numbers and the irony here is painful.

"And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? ... Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." -- Num 31:15-18

In answer to the slogan itself: Yes, because I exist, whereas God doesn't.

and they think OUR slogan was offensive.

and wait a minute...this isn't saying atheism leads to murder.

Quite the opposite...it's saying if someone doesn't think you're close enough to their god...they can shoot you. Because you don't matter.

Ever hear of Pol Pot? Mao Zedong? Joseph Stalin?

Which is not to say there haven't been plenty of "religious" murderers as well. With apologies to the NRA, people kill people.

True, you're right. One may argue that Stalin had replaced god with the party, requiring the same blind obedience and faith and so on, but they were calling themselves atheists. Mea culpa for not thinking it through.

@Ignazio: I think you're on to something, though. There's a grotesque caricature of religion discernible in Stalinism. But it's just that, a caricature.

Some religious people -- and some sects, I suppose -- devolve into similar caricatures of the real thing.

But the real thing is the enemy of all that.

Speaking of people worshipping despots -

According to Newsweek editor Evan Thomas, President Obama is "God,".

“In a way,” Thomas told Chris Matthews during a taping of Hardball, “Obama is standing above the country. Above … above the world …“He’s sort of God.”

And while it's disturbing enough to know that there is probably at least a dozen more that agree with him, what's even more disconcerting is remembering various times throughout history when a man was worshipped as God, only to turn around and seriously hurt the very people that worshipped him.

Well I'd say God doesn't matter to most theists I've met either so whatever the billboard is trying to say it rather... failed.
