The homeopathic swine...

Dear reader, our blog has moved to a new address.

Do come on over (and change your bookmarks accordingly): rationalist.org.uk

Of course, this had to happen. No sooner have the press whipped us all into a pandemic frenzy over the outbreak of swine flu, than the quacks step up with their helpful alternative remedies to this pesky H1N1. That's right – we learn via Ben Goldacre, he of Bad Science fame, that the good folks at Helio Homeopath have set up a page on their website advising on homeopathic remedies to the virus. We doubt readers of this blog are big fans of homeopathy, but just in case you have been to Mexico recently and are feeling a bit dodgy, we recommend you consult an actual doctor, because homeopathy doesn't work.

Meanwhile, as we observed the attempts to encourage everyone to worry about swine flu yesterday, we decided it was necessary to put a new spin on the famous Atheist Bus Campaign slogan, as you can see in the picture on this post.

I was particularly impressed by these two sentences, right next to each other, on the Helios web page:

"Homoeopathic treatment has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of epidemic diseases."

"However it must be stressed that there is at present only anecdotal proof that homoeopathic prophylaxis works."

But boy will you feel bad if it is a pandemic!

Here, I'll help compensate:

Sean, clearly homeopathy has been proven to cure epidemic diseases (all of them) but cannot prevent them (prophylaxis).

In fact, if you read that page carefully, they make no claim whatsoever that any homeopathic remedy will either treat or prevent swine flu. Bet that won't stop them selling it to you tho!

Either you guys are disinformation agents or you actually believe that homeopathy does not work.

I have seen it work wonders with many illnesses for over thirty years. It is especially dramatic in influenza. The speed of recovery sometimes borders on an optical illusion.

It is common to see dramatic relief in minutes after taking the CORRECT homeopathic remedy (wrong remedy selections will not work, sometimes leading people to think that HOMEOPATHY did not work).

Here’s a little history lesson:

Eleven U.S. Presidents, seven Popes (and numerous rabbis, Muslim clerics, and Eastern spiritual leaders.), Charles Darwin, David Beckham, Tina Turner, and Mother Teresa all benefited from homeopathic treatment and/or advocated for it! .

Charles Darwin could not have written "Origin of Species" without the homeopathic treatment that he received from Dr. Gully (based on Darwin's own letters!).

Numerous leading conventional physicians and scientists who have had extremely positive things to say about homeopathy include Sir William Osler (the "father of modern medicine"), Emil Adolph von Behring, MD (the "father of immunology"), Charles Frederick Menninger, MD (founder of the Menninger Clinic), August Bier, MD (the "father of spinal anesthesia"), C. Everett Koop, M.D. (former Surgeon General, U.S.), Brian Josephson, PhD. (Nobel Laureate & Cambridge professor).

Many of America's literary greats advocated for and often wrote about homeopathy, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Mark Twain... and European greats such as Goethe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and George Bernard Shaw.

Numerous sports greats have bragged about their use of homeopathic medicines including David Beckham, Martina Navratilova, Boris Becker, and many more.

Many world-class musicians have greatly appreciated homeopathy including Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, F. Chopin, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Cher, Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Townshend, Annie Lennox, Bob Weir, Paul Rodgers, Axl Rose, Moby, Jon Faddis, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Numerous movie and TV celebrities have benefited from homeopathy, including early stars such as Sarah Bernhardt, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Marlene Dietrich and John Wayne… and some of the modern-day stars, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lesley Ann Warren, Pamela Anderson, Jane Seymour, Suzanne Somers, Lindsay Wagner, Michael York, Dr. Phil and Robin McGraw, Priscilla & Lisa Marie Presley, Jennifer Aniston, Jade Jagger, Tobey Maguire, and Orlando Bloom.

Now I ask you : do you think all these very smart people used homeopathy because it did not work? I don’t either.

Speaking for myself, I actually believe homeopathy does not work!

I am scandalised that my tax money is being wasted on the homeopathy hospitals funded by the NHS despite the fact that homeopathy is theoretically implausible and has never been demonstrated in a proper double-blind medical trial. The NHS has a rigorous approach to establishing the effectiveness of treatments through NICE, but for some reason homeopathy is exempt from this.

Of course some people get better following homeopathic treatment, but some people get better with no treatment at all (which is actually what homeopathic treatment is!). Also there is the placebo effect, which is why double-blind trials are necessary.

Also if as you say, only CORRECT homeopathy works, then surely you have to have double-blind trials to establish which forms of homeopathy work and which do not?

Give me one properly conducted double-blind trial, not all these spurious appeals to supposed authority!
