Matt Damon: When does Sarah Palin think dinosaurs were around?

Dear reader, our blog has moved to a new address.

Do come on over (and change your bookmarks accordingly): rationalist.org.uk

Here's the video you've all been waiting for. Hollywood actor and well-known Democrat Matt Damon's not too impressed with American vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. He finds the prospect of her potentially becoming president scary and would like to know if she thinks dinosaurs were around 4,000 years ago:

My main question has to be is Damon speaking as Matt Damon or Jason Bourne? Because if he's speaking as Bourne, I'm listening...

Matt Damon thinks he is scared about Palin....Obama is running for the #1 post and we know hardly anything about him. I think he should be worried much more about that. He voted present over 100 times so he could not leave a record on his positions about issues. He has no foreign experience. John McCain has spent his whole life serving and fighting for his country. It would serve Matt Damon well to stick to acting

Matt Damon is completely right. For all of you close-minded Republicans out there, being a hockey mom and being a mayor of a town of 6,000 people hardly qualifies you to be next-in-line to the president of the United States. Likewise, to say that the public knows nothing of Obama is pure ignorance. Atleast Obama has put himself out there without relying on slanderous campaign ads like McCain, and atleast Obama isn't ambiguous in his vision for how this country will be run. There are some serious issues at stake this election, and regardless of your political affiliation, you should get informed on the real issues. Otherwise you are just ignorant. It's no surprise all the "blue states" are the educated, democrat-majority states. I urge you to read this comparison between Obama and McCain from MSNBC.com and compare their stances on some of the issues. GET INFORMED!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26533620/

In addition, it should be of great concern for all Americans the way we are viewed in a negative light around the globe. This is no longer a citystate empire, we are a global economy. John McCain's military service is not foreign policy experience, and Sarah Palin "seeing Russia from her house" isn't either. The best person in this campaign with proven foreign policy experience is Joe Biden. Do your homework, folks.

I really don't know what dinosaurs have to do with Gov. Palin being in a potential situation to "press the button." If Matt was alluding to her Christianity, why does he think that an avout Christian is more likely to press the button and start the "end of the world." Perhaps when he was studying in college it would have been good to do a little theological studies so Matt would have a better understanding about what it does teach.
Speaking as one who does have a living, breathing relationship with the Creator, believing in the deity of His Son, Jesus, no Christian I know would send the world into the abyss.
As evidenced by the irrational bombings of Muslim extremists, though, even blowing themselves up, I would not at all put it past a radical Muslim who had access to nuclear capability to "pull the trigger."
If you're going to say something, Matt, say something intelligent. I know you have that capability.

Anonymous said...

In response to Keith, if you really don't think that Sarah Palin thinking that dinosaurs roamed the earth of 4,000 years ago has something to say about intelligence, then you are just as dumb as she is. Just like when Charles Gibson on Dateline NBC asked Sarah Palin about her thoughts on the Bush Doctrine, widely known and simply understood, Sarah Palin did't even know what it was. How can you honestly believe that this woman could be qualified to potentially be the next in line to the presidency? And no offense, but Church and State are two separate institutions. While I want a leader who is of good moral and ethical character, a person of Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. etc. doesn't matter in this race. Maybe you should inform yourself before speaking again so you can say something intelligent.
As for anonymous, you're just an idiot. I may be from Boston, but its no surprise we have some of the best colleges, universities and hospitals in the world, nor is it surprising that some of our legislators are senior-most government officials. Atleast I get informed and educated before I open my big mouth. You should do the same, dumb ass.

InGodWeRust said...

Is it wilful ignorance that allows people of a religious bent, not to see the potential disaster that a creationist 'with the nuclear codes' would be. Just because (keith) doesn't know any fellow Christians that don't rejoice at the very idea of the end of days certainly doesn't mean they don't exist. Quarter-wits like Palin (and Keith and his ilk) should stick to what they know best - which is believing any shit without the need for any evidence. Fucking religious people just don't understand what is going on in their name. Bravo to Damon, something needs to be said and people have to be made aware of the 'hockey mom' who is potentially just a heartbeat away from having to make decisions that could effect us all. America, and religious people need to wake up and see what's going on.

To the anonymous who said we don't know anything about Obama - he's been running for 20 months. All the dirt that can be dug up on him has been dug up and fact checked a thousand times over. No one knows anything about the moose-shooter, so journalists (and citizens who really want to be informed) are scrambling to find out all they can on this person who might end up being the leader of this country. (Yikes!) And so far, what we've learned is alarming to anyone with foresight. Also, read up on the rest of the story about Obama's "present" votes. Rush Limbaugh doesn't give you the entire story. B.O. registered over 4000 votes while in the state senate. Present votes are common in IL and are used more for strategic reasons. Some of you people need to research the sound bytes you hear a little more thoroughly. That goes for both sides.

i think anyone listening to these so called actors about politics need to have their heads examined, why should we (the public)care what matt damon or of all people pam anderson says. Get the facts people, get the facts about both parties

I can't believe how ignorant Matt Damon is. Palin is not a hockey mom and then all of a sudden running for vice-president. She worked her way from a mayor, to governor and has much experience in between. Obama on the other hand doesn't have any executive experience - except being a community organizer and a senator for 3 years. Her experience in executive office is 6 years as mayor and almost 2 years as governor. Obama has NO EXECUTIVE experience. Doesn't matter if she is or was a hockey mom, Matt "idiot" Damon, she has expereince while your candidate Obama has NONE!!! Do you research before you go on TV and make an utterly fool or yourself!!!

InGodWeRust said...

Normally i would agree with people's assertions regarding the validity of the opinion of a celebrity or what actors say on politics - or anything else for that matter. The facts on the ground however are that lots of people are now too intellectually lazy to hunt for facts from intellectuals, or in a lot of cases to hunt for the truth at all. Celebrities are revered in today's 'dumb and proud of it' culture and if it takes Mat Damon to highlight what should be obvious to everybody i will take it.

Paul Sims said...

As I said in my blog post - he's not your average celeb. He's Jason Bourne. That's why I'm listening. The guy learns a new language every time he does a pull-up. And he only does pull-ups when he needs extra height to kick an assassin in the face.

Facts - that's what we deal in on this blog.

Here's why people might be concerned about her fundamentalist Christianity. If she truly believes in the apocalypse in her lifetime, and if the opportunity arises, then perhaps she might see her pushing the button as part of God's plan.

Maybe she thinks if she presses "the button", Jesus will pop out, like some kind of twisted jack-in-the-box.

I certainly hope Sarah Palin does NOT believe dinosaurs roamed the Earth 4,000 years ago. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago (at the end of the Cretaceous Period), after living on Earth for about 165 million years. (http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/dinosaurs/about.html)

"Obama on the other hand doesn't have any executive experience - except being a community organizer and a senator for 3 years. Her experience in executive office is 6 years as mayor and almost 2 years as governor. Obama has NO EXECUTIVE experience."

I've heard this argument a lot...but doesn't Obama have 7 years experience on the Illinois Senate and 3 on the US Senate? Isn't he considered one of the most productive senators around? I know it's not "executive experience," but it's legislative experience, and the president has a fairly large role in that.

Personally I'm just really excited by the prospect of having someone intelligent as a president and feel he is someone I can trust to research and know more about the issues than I do and act accordingly. Did you guys see him on O'Reilly? I've got a feeling he'll make us proud when the debates come.

Dinosaurs were put on the ark AS EGGS; thats how they fit. Scientists think theyre smart, but theyre too close-minded to be able to figure that out. They could not then survive in the new environment after the flood and they died off. But thats why we have found dinosaurs on cave paintings and their footprints fossilized next to human footprints and other animals. Palin is an intelligent woman, she knows all of this. Matt Damon is just a dumb actor.

I really honestly believe that anyone who votes republican is mentally damaged. I hate to tell you that Jesus can't run for president, and the best choice for president would be an educated atheist. Something like an education might seem "elitist" and foreign to certain internet morons, but seriously, it's time to stop electing people who have the appearance of being a "common man." No one wants a moron for president.

Call it un-american, but if McCain is elected president, I'll be applying for citizenship at the Canadian embassy as soon as I can. Everything I will have loved about america will have died, and the idiots will finally be in charge.

To the person who wrote about dinosaur eggs, all I can say is that those drawings of dinosaurs on the walls of caves, must be in the same caves as the one Sarah Palin lives in up in Alaska, cuz this lady is dumb as shit. You people who think she is qualified are pissing this country away and ruining it for the future. And having an education does not make you elitist, it makes you less dumb, dumb ass!

On December 28th, 2006, Sarah Palin VETOED a very important Alaskan bill.

Had governor Palin not VETOED the bill, this bill would have PROHIBITED the
Extension of Employment-Related Benefits to Same-Sex Partners of Alaska State Employees.

That's right, this bill would have PROHIBITED the Extension of Employment-Related
Benefits to Same-Sex Partners of Alaska State Employees.

See the Facts:
http://www.votesmart.org/official_veto_detail.php?can_id=27200&bill_no=HB%204001&entry_id=

Her Veto should be hailed publicly a triumph for liberals, but you will never hear about this
"fair minded" veto decision by Ms. Palin in the mainstream media or those on the far left for
a few reasons:

1) Our mainstream media and those on the far left suffer from "the soft bigotry of lowered expectations".
2) They just plain "don't care" about being fair about the facts on Ms. Palins record as governor.
3) Ms. Palin, as a career woman, represents the single greatest threat to the party that would like
to have sole ownership of the term "femenism", or "woman's rights".

as far as executive experience goes... mccain has none either. or did limbaugh not tell you that part? also, anyone who believes that man walked with dinosours, you're too stupid to vote. go play some tiddlywinks or something. leave the thinking to people with a working brain.

What I don't get is why people think that actors shouldn't talk about politics. Isn't Matt Damon a citizen of the United States? Doesn't he get one vote, just like you? Any, I repeat, ANY citizen of the US has a perfect right to speak their mind about the nominees or the issues. If Matt Damon wants to go on TV and talk about politics, so be it. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

I am seriously worried about the welfare of the United States in the years to come. As an American Citizen, living outside of the USA. I can say without a doubt in my mind Amercicans need to wake up - we have let the Politicians use their smoke and mirrors.. for far to long. The rich get more rich.. and the poor well the poor fall by the wayside. I know for a fact people take for granted that these Leaders we have.. are doing everything to our best interest. And that is just not true.

I am sure, that Sarah Palin is a good person. And she probably really thinks she is able to do this job. But - she does not have ..and I repeat.. she does not have the experience needed. Being a Vice President / being a President.. takes a bit more credentials then governing a small group of people. Then being a beauty queen. Then being a mother of wonderful kids.

I really hate to sit in judgement of Anyone..because who I am to judge ? But this really scares me when I see where my beautiful country is headed.

It scares me to hear so many people are in emergency of losing their homes -

It scares me when I think of my mom and dad.. Senior Cititenz.. paying a small fortune for their medicines each month..

It scares me to hear how big a debt America has. It infuriates me .. to hear Americans are bailing out the banks ... The same banks that will probably turn around and foreclose on many homes..

It infuriates me so many people are without healthcare..but America sure has enough money to go to war..

How many times do Americans have to pay ? How many times are you willing to pay ?

When is enough.. enough..

If you really want to get a grip on where you sit in the world today.. you need to do some hard core digging into what these "leaders" of ours .. are doing. MAKE them accountable ! Period. Everything they do .. they do in YOUR name.

I would like to know why someone who makes a video with a girl singing "Im F------- Matt Damon" (who is not his wife) thinks that anyone should to his political opinion. You kind of loose respect and credit when you do something like that. Shows bad judgement for sure.

But "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" is hilarious, and actually serves to make me respect his opinion even more. Because I like people with a sense of humour.

On the comment made sept 15, 2008 by anonymous at 15:45. I think you should come out from under that rock you have been hiding under and maybe watch the news a little bit. The only reason we know so much about John McCain is because i believe he ran for president in 2000, and his campaign was based on his time as a POW. But u know what, he lost.Obviously if he didn't even get the nomination then and lost the presidency in 08 then obviously the American public doesn't want him in control. Its a fact.

You do realize you contradict yourself in this comment. First off Palin was the mayor of some hick town in Alaska. That sure is some experience!! Then you go on to say obama had no experience but then you say that he served 3 years as a senator of Illinois. Its not much but it IS experience. So maybe you should read your comments before you post them.

Matt Damon is actually extremely intelligent. His parents are a stockbroker and a collegiate early childhood education professor. He went to Harvard (yes, that one) for three years before he took a chance to produce his original screenplay, "Good Will Hunting," with Ben Affleck. I completely reject your statement that Matt Damon is a mental midget. He may support a political position you disagree with, but at least acknowledge the fact that his mental prowess is greater than the majority of Americans.

I really think Matt Damon should get an Oscar for his performance in "ripping into Palin". It was such great acting, he is so funny. I enjoy all of Matt's movies. He is an extraordinary actor and performer. Not many people are as talented as he is. The people that truly believe that he was knocking and making fun of Governor Palin, a Governor of the United States of America, wake up!! He is an actor!! If you believed his drama and performance, then clap, this is what he does for a LIVING. Matt Damon is not a stupid man. He knows what he is doing. There is NO WAY he would not act it. Would a well known respected, highly paid well liked actor make fun of and poke derogatory remarks at Governor Schwarzenegger? Even if this well known actor really didn't like Governor Schwarzenegger? The answer is obvious. People wake up. Ask Matt, it was an act. The whole skit was an act. He is not that dumb.

It is still freaky that Palin is around...do people know that the world is laughing at a lot of the citizens in America? I think we should take our heads out of the oven and start to read the new political theorists that are emerging like Jean-Paul Gagnon and John Keane. For a start, try reading http://eprints.qut.edu.au/32495/1/c32495.pdf or http://eprints.qut.edu.au/31691/1/31691.pdf for a start for Gagnon or read The Life and Death of Democracy from Keane! We think we know so much about democracy when in reality nobody can agree on what it means! It's crazy, but unfortunately true.
