California's troubles are already rocking the state's big banks. California, a big engine of growth during the 1980's, is turning out to be an economic caboose in 1991, as it suffers from consistently high unemployment, a weakening real estate market and troubles in key industries like aerospace.
With fewer businesses being formed or expanding, developers can no longer find tenants to fill office buildings and shopping centers. That is adding up to large and growing losses on real estate loans and investments.
