Muslims protest Wikipedia entry

Dear reader, our blog has moved to a new address.

Do come on over (and change your bookmarks accordingly): rationalist.org.uk

Wikipedia has become the subject of an online petition from Muslims, who are unhappy with images included in the entry for the Prophet Muhammad.

Some Muslim users have taken offence to the inclusion of images from medieval manuscripts, which feature representations of Muhammad. The online petition has received more than 80,000 signatures and emails have been sent to Wikipedia demanding the images be removed. The call for users to sign the petition puts the case as follows:

"In Islam picture of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and other Humans are not allowed. But Wikipedia editors are showing illustrations with face illustrated and face is veiled or white washed. But still they are offensive to Muslims. I request all brothers and sisters to sign this petitions so we can tell Wikipedia to respect the religion and remove the illustrations. "

Despite the protests, Wikipedia has refused to remove the images. A message in the site's FAQs section explains its stance: “Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with the goal of representing all topics from a neutral point of view, Wikipedia is not censored for the benefit of any particular group.”

Good on SOMEONE, finally, for standing up to muslim bullies. Let me guess, they'll try to burn down Wiki offices next? Threaten bloodshed if they don't get their way?

If you cave into this it sets a precedent that any content could be deleted, go and look at Conservapedia for a taste of how that ends.

These protesters obviously don't use wikipedia otherwise the might have come across: Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy. So one wonders what is the problem? If it offends you: don't visit the site. Otherwise you are imposing your particular religious view on everyone.

It also boggles the mind that of everything on the web this is what they have decided to spend their time and effort protesting.

Well I think they should remove all offensive material from the net that offends everyone. Do you think there would be much left?

I agree completely cinnamonbite. Well done Wikipedia, for standing up for what is right.

Actually, I think it's just muslims themselves who are bound by those rules. Non-muslims are essentially not prohibited from breaking Islamic laws. But then again, in the strictest interpretations of the Quran, the muslims are probably urged to kill all infidels.

I am utterly offended, hurt, insulted, distressed, and devastated to the core that anyone would want to infringe on First Amendment rights, and call on all those who have sought to remove Muhammad's image from Wikipedia to retract their statements immediately and thus show their sensitivity to my feelings and respect for my laws and customs.

I guess the petition demanding that Muslims stop using mentally retarded girls as walking land mines got lost in the mail.

Benjamin, Conservapedia generally gets its publicity from culture war issues like atheism , homosexuality, theory of evolution, and young earth earth creationism.
