Westboro Baptist Church will picket Heath Ledger's funeral

Dear reader, our blog has moved to a new address.

Do come on over (and change your bookmarks accordingly): rationalist.org.uk

The Westboro Baptist Church have announced plans to picket the funeral of Australian actor Heath Ledger, who died yesterday aged just 28.

The Church, who have become infamous for saying God is enacting his revenge on America for its acceptance of homosexuality, and for picketing the funerals of US soldiers killed in Iraq, announced on their website that they will picket the actors funeral because he "promoted homosexuality" by starring in Brokeback Mountain.

With this in mind, it's worth repeating the words of Mariana Hyde from her Guardian showbiz blog: "Further comment feels unnecessary, other than perhaps to wonder whether the "church" will ever realise that their continued existence is the most eloquent argument against the existence of any deity. And then to accept the answer would be a no."

Bloody bastards. Though in our celebrity-obsessed age it seems extremely likely that their latest high-profile stunt will lead to them either being attacked by angry mourners or finally being pulled up on their hateful actions. They may be an extremist minority, but they epitomise many of the repellent aspects of fundamentalist Christians in America.

If you think the WBC represents Christianity, then you don't know much about Christianity.

This does not represent the masses in America there is much good among the bad. Yet this small group of people will do anything for the headlines, which is disgusting and contradicts Christianity in it self. What is even more scary is this group will pass on their narrow-minded views on to their children.

I am a Christian, and I think that what this WBC group is doing is vile. I dispute any correlation to their "religion" being called Christianity. A true Christian does not judge his fellow man and I am as sickened as anyone else by this groups statements and intentions. Christianity is not hatred, but like any other belief, there are followers that severely twist its teachings - these people do not speak for me. I send love to Heath's sweet soul, and love to his family and friends.

How dare you take religion into your own hands. If you understood the meaning of the bible, we are all Gods creatures on Earth and in mine and many others' opinions Heath Ledger was a beautiful man with an incredible soul. His appearance in Brokeback Mountain brought courage to many and enpowered many to act on their emotions, there is nothin wrong with this and there never will be. You may interpret Gods writings as that being homosexual is vile, but it is indeed beautiful and those who disagree are not true christians in the eye of the lord himself.

I am an atheist and I also want to echo the sentiments above on the nasty WBC and their ridiculous behaviour.

We all know that the aggressive and contemptable actions, along with their absurdly dogmatic opinions, of the WBC are a million miles from conventional Christianity.

PS. It's nice to see some (normal)Christians on the New Humanist blog!!
